Why Gacha Life Old Versions Are So Popular

Most games do not have a serious “old version” community. Gacha Life does. There are three reasons, and they all trace back to real events in Lunime’s history.

Reason 1: The 1.1.13 removals

In 2021, Lunime removed skin-colored clothing options, some mouth designs, and several poses from the Android version. The reason was community pressure. Some players had been using those items to create inappropriate content. Lunime’s fix was to remove the tools. The result was a large community backlash from creators who used those items for legitimate character design. The pre-1.1.13 versions became a nostalgia target overnight.

Reason 2: Chat

Before September 2020, Gacha Life had online chat rooms. Level 10 players could join channels and talk to other users. Lunime removed the feature in version 1.1.3 for safety reasons around younger players. The chat feature never came back and was never on iOS or PC. Any player who remembers Gacha Life chat is remembering version 1.1.0 or earlier.

Reason 3: Old Android compatibility

Gacha Life’s audience skews young, and young players often use older or hand-me-down phones. Newer builds target higher Android SDK levels, which means they refuse to install or run poorly on older devices. Older APKs solve that.

Understand which reason applies to you before you pick a version. The right version depends entirely on what you actually want.

Before You Install: Four Things That Will Save You Trouble

Your characters will be wiped

Android does not allow installing a lower version over a higher one. To install an old version, you first uninstall the current one. That deletes every character, scene, and Gacha collection you have. There is no cloud backup, and iCloud will not save you. Screenshot every character in the editor before you touch the uninstall button.

Play Protect may block the install

Google’s built-in security service flags any APK that targets an outdated Android SDK level. Older Gacha Life builds do. The warning is not a virus alert. It is a policy warning about the age of the file. You can tap “Install Anyway” to proceed, but understand that Play Protect will flag it again every time Google updates its rules.

In-app purchases may not work

The payment API on old Android builds is different from what modern versions expect. If you want to buy anything in the game, use the current version.

You cannot install two versions side by side

Both use the same package name. Android treats them as the same app. Some Samsung and Xiaomi phones offer a “Dual Messenger” or “App Twin” feature that clones an app into a second instance. That is a phone feature, not a Gacha Life feature, and it is not officially supported.

Full Version History with Real Changelogs

Each entry below is drawn from Lunime release notes, APK archive records, and community documentation. No filler. Every fact is verifiable.

Version 1.1.14

Current
Download

Around 108 MB. This is the version most APK sites, including our own homepage, serve as “latest.” It is a partial reversal of the 1.1.13 removals. Lunime restored several poses that had been pulled, most notably the sleeping character poses that scene builders relied on. The skin-tone clothing options and the altered mouth designs from 1.1.13 stayed removed. Bug fixes and minor stability tweaks for newer Android versions were included.

If your only goal is to play Gacha Life today on a modern phone, this is the correct version. It is the most compatible with Android 13, 14, and 15.

Version 1.1.13

Controversial
Download

The controversial release. Lunime removed skin-colored clothing options from the palette, altered several mouth designs (mostly on the eighth mouth page), and replaced several poses. Every change was aimed at preventing inappropriate content creation. The community backlash was significant. Many established Gacha creators publicly complained that legitimate character design work became harder because skin-tone clothing was often used for anatomy shading, not anything inappropriate.

This is the version people mean when they say “the update that ruined Gacha Life.” Nobody in the community actively wants 1.1.13 itself. They want 1.1.4 or earlier.

Version 1.1.4

Creator favorite
Download

Released August 2023. Around 108 MB. This is the sweet spot for creators who want pre-censorship character options with the smallest possible feature gap from the current build. It has the full clothing palette, the original mouth designs, and the older poses. It also has the maintenance fixes Lunime shipped between 1.1.3 and 1.1.13.

If you are a creator who wants your character work to look the way Gacha Life looked in 2020 to 2022, this is the version you want. Most old-version searches on Google are effectively looking for this build.

Version 1.1.3

Chat removed
Download

Released September 2020. The version where chat died. Before 1.1.3, players who reached level 10 could enter chat rooms and talk to other Gacha Life users. Chat had multiple channels organized by interest. The feature was the closest thing Gacha Life had to a social platform. Lunime removed it in this update for safety reasons after growing concern about younger users interacting with strangers.

Nobody uses 1.1.3 itself. It is the version chat left in. If you want chat, you install 1.1.0 or earlier.

Version 1.1.0

Last with chat
Download

Released September 2019. Around 99.7 MB. This is one of the two most-searched old versions. The reason is chat. Version 1.1.0 was released before the chat removal, so it still contains the full multi-channel chat system. Lunime added a language font option in this release so international players could type in their own scripts, and fixed a keyboard bug on Android 9 (Pie) devices.

Install this version if you want chat back. Understand two things: many of the players you would have chatted with in 2019 do not use Gacha Life anymore, and Lunime is not maintaining the servers actively.

Version 1.0.9

Old-phone friendly
Download

Released June 2019. Around 100 MB. Popular target for players on older Android phones. Version 1.0.9 targets a lower Android SDK level, which means it installs and runs on Android 4.4 (KitKat) and Android 5.0 (Lollipop) devices where newer versions fail. It also predates the chat removal, so chat is available.

Best pick if you are trying to play Gacha Life on a phone released before 2018 or so. Not necessarily the best pick if your phone is newer, because Play Protect will complain louder about how old the file is.

Version 1.0.8 — The Winter Update

Last real update
Download

Released December 2018. The last real content update Gacha Life ever received. Lunime added new holiday-themed Gacha characters, added new NPCs to Life Mode, added new customization options, added new poses, and raised the Gacha pull rates. If someone tells you Gacha Life has not been updated in years, this is the last meaningful update they are talking about.

Everything Lunime shipped after December 2018 has been either maintenance patches, security fixes, or content removals. No new modes. No new mini-games. No new items. This version is a snapshot of Gacha Life at its peak content.

Versions 1.0.5 – 1.0.7

Late 2018 builds
Download

Small maintenance releases in the months after Gacha Life first launched in October 2018. Around 90 MB each. Only useful if you own a very old Android phone where nothing newer runs. On any phone made after 2019, use 1.0.9 or higher instead.

Which Old Version Should You Actually Install

Skip the vague “it depends” advice. Real recommendations by user type.

You are a creator who misses the old character options

Install version 1.1.4. It is the most recent build with the full pre-censorship palette. You lose the pose restoration from 1.1.14 but keep the clothing and mouth options that matter most for character work.

You are a returning player who remembers chat

Install version 1.1.0. You get chat and you get the language font option. Understand that chat is quiet now. Most active users left when the feature was removed.

You have an old Android phone that struggles

Install version 1.0.9. It targets the lowest Android SDK level of any modern-enough build.

You are a parent installing for a young child

Install version 1.1.14. The current build removed the exact content that would concern you. Older versions bring back features you probably do not want a young child to have.

You are a Gacha YouTuber matching an old video

Match the video’s upload date to the version history. Late 2018 to mid-2019 videos used 1.0.5 through 1.0.9. Late 2019 through 2020 used 1.1.0. 2020 through mid-2023 used 1.1.3 or 1.1.4.

You just want stability

Stay on version 1.1.14. Older builds are not more stable on modern Android. They are less stable.

Why Gacha Life Stopped Getting Real Updates

This is context most APK sites skip, but it is what makes the old-version conversation make sense. Gacha Life came out in October 2018. Lunime shipped the Winter Update in December 2018. Every release after that has been maintenance, safety, or censorship. No new modes. No new mini-games. No new items.

The reason is that Lunime moved on. Gacha Club launched in 2020 as the successor with a bigger character library and a battle mode. Gacha Life 2 launched in October 2023 as the actual sequel, with 300 character slots and a rebuilt Studio Mode. Lunime’s Discord and public statements confirm the developer has been focused on newer projects, including WonderEnd and a paused Gacha Life 3 project.

Gacha Life 1 is not going to get new content. Every version listed above is essentially frozen in time. If you want new features, install Gacha Life 2 instead.

System Requirements by Version

1.0.5 – 1.0.9

  • Android 4.4 (KitKat) or higher
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 150 MB free storage

1.1.0 – 1.1.4

  • Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 200 MB free storage

1.1.13 – 1.1.14

  • Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher

All versions run offline once installed. Internet is only needed for the initial APK download.

How to Install an Old Version on Android

The install process for an older APK is different from the current build in one important way: you must uninstall the newer version first.

  1. Screenshot every character you want to keep. Save the screenshots to Google Photos or your device’s Photos app so they survive the uninstall.
  2. Open Settings on your phone. Go to Apps. Find Gacha Life. Tap Uninstall. This removes the app and all local save data.
  3. Download the older APK file you want using any of the download buttons above.
  4. Open Settings. Go to Apps, then Special Access, then Install Unknown Apps. Find the browser you used (Chrome, Samsung Internet, Firefox). Turn on Allow from this source.
  5. Open the Downloads folder in your file manager. Tap the APK file.
  6. Android shows a warning about unknown sources. Tap Install.
  7. If Play Protect blocks the install, tap Install Anyway. This is normal for older APKs.
  8. Wait 20 to 40 seconds. Tap Open.

If the install fails with a signature error, the file has been modified. Delete it and download from a fresh source.

Old Versions on iPhone and PC

iPhone

No route. iOS does not allow version downgrades outside the App Store. The App Store only serves the current version, and older iOS builds cannot be reinstalled. If your iPhone has issues with the current version, switch to Gacha Life 2 instead. See our iOS page.

PC

Any Android APK, including older Gacha Life builds, installs into BlueStacks and other emulators the same way as the current version. Follow our PC guide and drop the older APK into the emulator instead of the current one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which old version had chat?

Every version from the original release through 1.1.0. Chat was removed in the 1.1.3 update in September 2020. It was never available on iOS or PC.

Was Gacha Life ever really “uncensored”?

Not in the way the term usually means. What people call “uncensored Gacha Life” is any version before 1.1.13, when skin-tone clothing options, some mouth designs, and some poses were still in the game. Those items were never inappropriate on their own. Lunime removed them because a small number of players were using them to make inappropriate content. Any version 1.1.4 or earlier still has them.

Can I still make in-app purchases in old versions?

Purchases in old versions often fail on Android 8 and higher because the payment API changed. If you want to buy in-game items, use the current version.

What version do most Gacha YouTubers use?

Most active creators today are on the current version (1.1.14) or on Gacha Club and Gacha Life 2. Legacy creators from 2018 to 2020 used the version current at their upload date. For an accurate style match, check the video’s upload date against the version history above.

Is there a version that removed live chat but kept the skin-tone clothing?

Yes. Versions 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 have no chat but still have the original character options. If you are a parent who wants the game safer without the community-driven censorship, 1.1.4 is your target.

Do old versions affect Gacha Club or Gacha Life 2?

No. Each game is a separate app with a separate package name. Installing an old version of Gacha Life does not touch Gacha Club or Gacha Life 2. All three games can be installed at the same time.

Why does Google Play Protect flag old APKs?

Google requires new apps published to the Play Store to target recent Android SDK levels. Older APKs target older SDK levels. Play Protect flags this to warn users, not because the file is dangerous, but because it is out of date by Google’s own definition.

Does Lunime endorse installing old versions?

No. Lunime distributes only the current version through the Play Store. Older versions are archived by third parties. Lunime has not commented publicly on whether they oppose the practice, but their official position is to use the current build.

Will old versions ever come back to the Play Store?

No. Google does not distribute historical app versions. Once a developer updates a listing, the old version is gone from the Play Store forever. Third-party archives are the only source.

Is there any way to keep chat alive in modern Gacha Life?

No. Even if you install version 1.1.0 and the chat interface loads, Lunime’s chat servers may no longer function reliably. The feature was designed for the level of community activity Gacha Life had in 2019 and 2020.

How do I know which version I have installed right now?

Open Gacha Life. Look at the bottom-right corner of the main menu. The version number is displayed there. Alternatively, open Settings, Apps, Gacha Life, and read the version number.

Does installing an old version void anything?

Nothing you have to worry about. There is no license, no account tied to a specific version, and no online service that will lock you out.

Can I export characters from an old version to install into a new one?

No. Gacha Life has no character export or import feature. The only way to preserve characters across a version change is screenshots.
